Black Girl Joy Event!
“You have to believe in yourself when no one else does.” — Serena Williams
The 2nd annual Black Girl Joy Event took place on August 12th, a celebration dedicated to young girls of color, emphasizing their incredible worth. Purple and pink tents adorned with welcoming signs for little black girls of all ages led to a long purple carpet, transforming each girl into a runway model. Upon arrival, each girl received uplifting words from a beautiful black woman who guided them to their designated area.
As the girls received their T-shirts and passes, they were welcomed warmly by others and entered a large tent featuring an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet. Speakers encouraged the young attendees to mingle and make new friends. I watched attentively as my daughter slowly released my hand to join the other girls. Following a vibrant procession of beautiful, melanated girls of every hue, stature, and size, they shared laughter and camaraderie, moving from one workshop to another. The complimentary workshops offered a variety of topics, including college preparation, dance, self-defense, health screenings, drumming & yoga, arts & crafts, and double dutch.
