Recently, I came across a TikTok video where a man went live after discovering a toddler and an infant in an abandoned house. Part of me was relieved that the children were found, but it also made me wonder why someone wouldn’t simply take unwanted children to a police or fire department. Child Abandonment Statistics indicate that approximately 140 million children globally are orphaned due to abandonment. A particularly disturbing case involved Joslin Smit, a 6-year-old South African girl trafficked by her family. She remains missing. In the United States, children are frequently abandoned, sometimes fatally. The Safely Surrendered Baby Law, established in January 2001 and made permanent in January 2006, aims to prevent newborn deaths by allowing parents or legal guardians to surrender infants within 72 hours of birth without facing criminal charges. Despite its life-saving potential, there seems to be a lack of widespread promotion for this law, such as commercials or flyers, to prevent child abandonment.
